Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as ‘Mahatma’ (great soul) Gandhi was the leader of the Indian nationalist movement against British rule, and is widely considered the father of India. His doctrine of non-violent protests to achieve political and social progress has been hugely influential. He was born on 2 October 1869 in Gujarat, India. He died on 30 January 1948 when he was assassinated by a member of a Hindu radical extremist group.
